credo ut intellegam
   The phrase 'credo ut intellegam' (in English, 'I believe in order that I may understand') was used by Augustine and Anselm to express the belief that faith must precede understanding - in other words, one cannot hope to understand the beliefs of the Christian tradition unless one shares them. Some Christian philosophers have enthusiastically embraced this principle, while others have worried about whether it is really possible to believe something without understanding it in order to understand it. Perhaps the best way to apply the principle is to think of there being degrees of belief and degrees of understanding, and that in order to advance in understanding one must first advance in belief.
